The year Delta State won it all
In its 75th year of football, Delta State finally had a season that ended with a trophy.
The Statesmen beat Bloomsburg 63-34 on Dec. 9, 2000, at Braly Municipal Stadium to win the university’s first NCAA Division II football national championship — and they did it in a way that rewrote the record book. Delta State finished 14-1, with a Gulf South Conference championship and a season that produced the program’s highest win total and a .933 winning percentage.
The quarterback
The season ran through Josh Bright. The senior quarterback operated a triple-option attack that head coach Steve Campbell had built around him, and by December it was close to unstoppable.
Bright had been named the Conerly Trophy winner as Mississippi’s top collegiate player the week before the title game. He then put 175 rushing yards and three touchdowns on Bloomsburg, and Delta State never looked back.
The playoff run
Delta State opened the NCAA playoffs at home and didn’t lose again.
| Round | Opponent | Result | Site |
|---|---|---|---|
| First round | Valdosta State | W 49-12 | Cleveland, Miss. |
| Quarterfinals | at Catawba | W 20-14 | Salisbury, N.C. |
| Semifinals | North Dakota State | W 34-16 | Cleveland, Miss. |
| Championship | Bloomsburg | W 63-34 | Florence, Ala. |
The Statesmen went 2-0 at home and 2-0 on the road across the run, opening with a 49-12 drubbing of Valdosta State — a conference opponent they’d already beaten in the regular season — then surviving a 20-14 road scare at Catawba that was the closest game of the postseason.
The semifinal against North Dakota State, a 34-16 win in Cleveland, sent them to the first national championship game in program history.

The records
The title game was a demolition, and the NCAA’s own record book still lists it.
Delta State broke four championship game records:
- Points — 63 (a mark that also set the combined-game record at 97 points with Bloomsburg’s 34)
- Rushing yards — 524, on 69 carries
- Total yards — 649
- First downs — 36 (29 rushing, six passing, one by penalty)
The 524 rushing yards and 649 total yards remain championship game records. So does the 36 first downs. The Statesmen scored more points than any team had in the title game since 1999’s 58-52 four-overtime classic.
Bloomsburg scored first, and Delta State trailed in the postseason for the first time all year — then ran away with it. The crowd at Braly Municipal was 7,123.

The architect
Steve Campbell became the first head coach in Delta State football history named AFCA National Division II Coach of the Year.
The 2000 season was the program’s ninth NCAA playoff appearance and its first championship. Delta State had won the Gulf South Conference in 1998 under Campbell before breaking through two years later.

The aftermath
The Mississippi Legislature passed House Concurrent Resolution 40 in the 2001 session honoring the team — referring to them as the Delta State “Fighting Okra” — citing Bright, Campbell and the four NCAA records.
Delta State football would return to the title game in 2010, falling to Minnesota-Duluth 20-17 at the same stadium in Florence. The 2000 trophy remains the program’s only football national championship.
Twenty-five years on, the university brought the team back. In October 2025, Delta State held a reunion honoring the 2000 national championship squad — the group that turned 75 years of Statesmen football into a season with a banner at the end of it.
