The Statesmen’s turnaround has been nothing short of incredible
The Statesmen trailed by 18 in the third quarter, on the road, in a state they’d never played in. They won anyway.
Delta State’s 22-21 win at Frostburg State on Saturday extended the winning streak to five straight games — a run that has completely reversed a season that began in disaster. The Statesmen are now 5-3 overall and 1-0 in Gulf South Conference play.
How it turned
The opening three weeks were ugly. Delta State lost 52-0 at Northeastern State, 36-13 at home to Wingate, and 59-10 at Central Missouri — three defeats by a combined 124 points. Through that stretch the Statesmen were allowing an average of 49 points and 537 yards per game.
Then the defense found something.

Back-to-back shutouts and a pair of seven-point games tell the story: this team wins with defense. West Alabama came in ranked No. 25 and left with a loss. Ferrum was held to seven. Shorter was held to nothing.
Saturday’s comeback
At Frostburg, Delta State trailed 21-13 entering the fourth quarter — and the deficit had been 18 after the Bobcats returned a punt 52 yards for a touchdown early in the third.
The response was immediate. Delta State marched 75 yards in seven plays, with Emile Picarella connecting with Lawrence Armstrong for a 34-yard touchdown to cut it to 21-13. Then an 11-play, 76-yard drive in the fourth pulled the Statesmen level, setting up Price Nixon’s 23-yard field goal with 55 seconds left for the win.
The defense didn’t allow a touchdown in the second half.

The recognition
The conference noticed. Two Statesmen earned Gulf South Conference weekly honors this week: Jordan Bradley as GSC Defensive Player of the Week — the Pensacola native collected four tackles and a career-best two interceptions against Frostburg — and kicker Price Nixon for his game-winner.
Nick Clark had earned GSC weekly recognition a week earlier for his performance in the West Alabama win.
The bigger picture
This is David Dean’s first season in Cleveland. He was hired as the program’s 20th head coach on Feb. 6, 2026, arriving with three NCAA Division II national championships, a national runner-up finish, seven Gulf South titles, and a 127-47 career record — most recently as the winningest coach in West Georgia history at 48-20.
He inherited a program that needed a turnaround, and after three weeks it looked like the season might be lost. Five wins later, the Statesmen are undefeated in conference and playing for something.
What’s next
Delta State has the week off before hosting Valdosta State on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 1 p.m. — Senior Day, and the final Gulf South Conference Football Championship game at Parker-McCool.
That’s the test. Valdosta State is the program the Statesmen beat 49-12 to open their 2000 national championship playoff run, and the last conference hurdle between this team and a season that would look nothing like the way it started.
