Delta State’s defense faces Montevallo with GSC championship berth at stake

Delta State is one win from the Gulf South Conference women’s soccer championship match, but getting there means slowing a Montevallo offense averaging 3.44 goals per game.

The fourth-seeded Lady Statesmen face the top-seeded Falcons Friday in Huntsville, Alabama, looking to build on the first GSC Tournament victory in program history.

Their previous meeting provides reason for confidence — and a clear picture of the challenge ahead.

Delta State held Montevallo to a 1-1 draw September 26 in Cleveland despite being outshot 20-8 and conceding 11 corner kicks. Goalkeeper Kim Bircher recorded 10 saves, helping keep the Lady Statesmen in position to take a late lead.

Caroline Chandler scored in the 84th minute off an assist from Emma Earwood, but Montevallo answered just 42 seconds later. That sequence makes maintaining concentration after a breakthrough a key point in the rematch.

Now, Delta State must find a way to reduce the pressure Bircher faced in that first meeting.

Montevallo enters the semifinal at 15-2-1 after defeating Trevecca Nazarene 6-0 in the quarterfinals. Six different Falcons scored in that victory, underscoring the difficulty of containing an offense with multiple scoring options.

Lainey Farabaugh leads Montevallo with 14 goals and nine assists. Ayla Ertekin has contributed 12 goals, while Karsyn Ross has six goals and 11 assists. Together, they help drive an attack that has produced 62 goals this season.

For the Lady Statesmen, limiting those opportunities will require support throughout the lineup. Keeping possession for longer stretches and preventing repeated attacks could ease the workload on Bircher and the back line.

Delta State showed its ability to protect a narrow advantage in Sunday’s 1-0 quarterfinal victory over Valdosta State. Chandler delivered the deciding goal in the 70th minute, and Bircher finished with five saves as the Lady Statesmen held on through the closing stretch.

Chandler’s recent contributions also give Delta State a scoring threat with a history of delivering in this matchup. She scored against Montevallo in September and supplied the goal that extended the Lady Statesmen’s postseason run.

Another timely finish, paired with a disciplined defensive effort, could carry Delta State into the championship match.

Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT Friday, November 6, at the Loretta P. Spencer Sports Complex Championship Field in Huntsville. The match will stream on FloCollege. The winner faces either Lee or UAH in Sunday’s championship match at noon CT.
